Ceremonial Turnover of Murillo-Velarde Map

NU Manila welcomes a historic piece of Philippine heritage.

A commemorative copy of the Murillo-Velarde 1734 Map was formally turned over to NU Manila as part of the Mapa Natin, Kwento Natin campaign of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), through an initiative of the Legacy Office in collaboration with the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences (CEAS).

The ceremonial turnover was led by NU President and CEO Dr. Renato Carlos H. Ermita Jr. and AIJC Chairman Mel V. Velarde, with NU Senior Vice President for Operations Dr. Arlene O. Trillanes and AIJC President Therese San Diego Torres serving as witnesses to the signing of the Deed of Donation. In accepting the map on behalf of the NU community, Dr. Ermita expressed the university’s intention to bring the commemorative map to other NU campuses as well, allowing its historical significance to be shared with the wider Nationalian community of 95,000 students.

More than a historic document, the map will become a valuable learning resource for Nationalians, complementing the Nationalian course and giving students an opportunity to explore Philippine history, heritage, and maritime identity. Its presence at NU Manila will help bring history closer to the Nationalian community, encouraging students to learn from the past, appreciate the stories that shaped the nation, and develop a deeper sense of patriotism.

Through this meaningful partnership, NU Manila continues to create learning experiences that connect history, heritage, and education, advancing its commitment to Education That Works.
